This painting marked a departure from my usual approach. Rather than starting in the center and working outward, I began at the edges and left the center open—applying modeling paste for texture and emphasis. I envisioned a figure marooned on an island, surrounded by a chaotic, encroaching energy. The linework is classic of my style: bold, rough, and irregular. I prefer the raw, jagged edges of these brushes to smooth ones, which I reserve for finer details. This irregularity gives the piece its energy—and gives the linework its voice, my “signature” in the painting.
